Agência Nacional Inovação (ANI) is a state-owned agency funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation. Working within a network of administrative departments, technological centres, business associations and other S&T entities located in Portugal, ANI also pursues a policy of promoting internacional co-operation. As such, it acts as a link between the European Union, Asia, Latin America and various international R&D organisations.
The NSRF Observatory is a structure aimed at ensuring the performance of technical activities of strategic coordination and monitoring of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF). The NSRF constitutes the framework for the application of the funding from the European Union's cohesion policy in Portugal during the period 2007-2013, reflected in an investment of about €21.5m, serving the country's development.
The Office to support the participation in Horizon 2020 (GPPQ) promotes and supports the participation of national, scientific and business communities in Horizon 2020 - The Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the EU (2014-2020). The mission of GPPQ is to bridge the gap between researchers and Portuguese companies and activities of Horizon 2020 through mutual coordination of delegates to the committees, the network of National Contact Points and the representatives of the Technology Platforms European and Joint Technology Initiatives.
GPEARI’s assures the planning and monitoring of policies and activities in the S&T areas in Portugal. GPEARI's mission is assuring the technical support for policy design and strategic planning in these areas, while promoting at the same time the coordination between policy making and financial programming. The promotion and implementation of the policy of international relations in S&T is also part of GPEARI’s mission.
The Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT) is the main funding agency for research in Portugal with a status of public organisation with administrative and financial autonomy, under the aegis of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES). FCT covers all fields of science, from natural sciences to humanities.
The Academy of Sciences of Lisbon was created in 1779 as an institution to promote the advancement of science and learning for the progress and prosperity of the country. The Academy has two classes, Sciences and Letters, each one with 30 full members and 60 corresponding members distributed in 6 sections. It has also a number of foreign members. The Academy was one of the first National Members of ICSU, is one of the 3 Portuguese Members of the European Science Foundation, and is the Portuguese partner of the European Science Exchange Programme of the Royal Society, London.
