The Agricultural Research Institute is engaged in basic and theoretical agricultural research. Main activities include research in new crop varieties and trials for adaptation of imported varieties to the local environment. It is also involved in research on integrated organic agriculture, entomology, plant pathology, dermatology, weed control, insect toxicology, soil fertility, plant nutrition and water requirements. The institute furthermore advises the government on agriculture-related issues.
Cyprus University of Technology is the main technical university in Cyprus and one of the largest public research organisations. It was involved in the preparation of the Cypriot Smart Specialisation Strategy.
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) carries out research on the sustainable use of marine resources, the development and sound management of fisheries and aquaculture, the marine ecology, the protection of endangered species and habitats, physical and chemical oceanography, and the prevention and combat of marine pollution. Furthermore, within the framework of the fisheries development, the Department promotes supporting programmes to fishermen. It is also responsible for the enforcement of the corresponding legislation.
The Directorate General for European Programmes, Coordination and Development (DGEPCD, officially named Planning Bureau until 2013) is responsible for R&I policy coordination and budget allocation. In 2013, its role was extended to include the coordination and implementation of the MOU between Cyprus, the IMF and the ECB, the implementation of the Europe2020 strategy in Cyprus, and the coordination and implementation of EU programmes. DGEPCD furthermore led the preparation of the Cypriot Smart Specialisation Strategy.
The Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Trade is member of the National Council for Research and Innovation, formally the highest body for formulating R&D strategy. The Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Trade acts also as research funder through its Technology and Industrial Development Units which support entrepreneurship and innovation measures. Since 2012 it has been the body formally responsible for spending of Structural Funds for innovation policy.
The Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) is responsible for the implementation of research and innovation activities. It is the main research funding agency in Cyprus and also coordinates implementation of policies as diverse as EURAXESS participation, the ESFRI roadmap, Smart Specialisation, and IPR commercialisation support.
Research at the Cyprus Institute is carried out in cross-disciplinary Centers that address problems of great scholarly relevance, global significance and regional focus. The overall goal of the research program is to apply rigorous scientific and technological approaches to issues that are of clear relevance to Cyprus, the EU, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The institute conducts research on neurological and genetic conditions such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chromosomal abnormalities and all other aspects of molecular biology and genetics such as thalassaemia, molecular virology, mental retardation, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cystic fibrosis and neurogenetics. It also offers academic degrees in collaboration with institutions and universities both from Cyprus and abroad.
