The University of Malta (UoM) is the only state funded university and the only institution authorized to confer doctoral degrees. It is largely responsible for the research and development expenditure in the higher education sector. The university had a student population of approximately 11,500 in 2014. Around 750 of these were foreign students. It is primarily a teaching university and offers general degree courses in a wide range of disciplines designed to produce highly qualified professionals, with experience of research, who can play key roles in industry, commerce and the public sector in general. The University is also home to a number of leading research programmes.
